Recipe: Four Cheese and Ham Toasted Sandwich

This four cheese and ham toasted sandwich by Julia Busuttil Nishimura, known on Instagram as Julia Ostro, is a rich, golden and deeply satisfying take on the classic cheese toastie.

Made with sourdough bread, Dijon mustard, sliced ham and a generous mix of mozzarella, cheddar, Gruyere and provolone, it’s fried in butter until crisp on the outside and melted in the middle. Served with pickles, this easy toasted sandwich recipe is perfect for lunch, a quick dinner or a comforting way to use quality sourdough bread at home.

Four Cheese and Ham Toasted Sandwich

Serves 4

Ingredients

- 8 slices sourdough bread

- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

- 8 slices ham

- 100 g Mozzarella, grated

- 100 g cheddar, grated

- 50 g Gruyere, grated

- 50 g provolone, grated

- Salt and pepper, to taste

- Butter, for frying

- Pickles, to serve

Method

Arrange the bread onto a clean work surface. Spread each slice of bread with Dijon mustard and top four of the slices with ham, followed by cheese. Season with salt and pepper and close the sandwich with another slice of bread.

Heat a pan over a medium heat and add a good knob of butter. Working in batches, fry the sandwiches until golden, around 3 minutes each side. Repeat with remaining sandwiches.

Serve with pickles.
